Thanks to parishioner Michael Wheeler for bringing this forthcoming charity event to our attention. The subject of caring is close to Michael's heart, as he explains:
LIVE AT THE ARNAUD – SUNDAY 31 MARCH 2019
The Mayor of Guildford, Mike Parsons, is holding a fundraising event, “Live at the Arnaud”, on Sunday 31 March at 19.30 in aid of his mayoral charities. Mike’s primary aim in his year of office is “Guildford Young Carers”, a new and exciting initiative to try and help the many young carers in Guildford. Estimates suggest that as many as 8% of children aged 5 to 18 in many areas of Guildford act as carers, mostly unrecognised and hidden from society. Many of these children and young people fail to realise their academic potential, often suffer from mental health issues, bullying and social media abuse.
Many of these children and young people find their normal lives being replaced by caring for a relative within a family unit. Many do not even realise they are acting as carers – it’s just what they do. They find it hard to access help and fall behind at school and lose out totally on their precious childhood time.
The Guildford Young Carers Fund has been established within Guildford Philanthropy to help these children and young people by providing additional support in and outside of school, extra tuition, IT and other equipment to support their educational needs, money for school trips and outings and for music, sport and play activities outside school.
This event at the Yvonne Arnaud on 31 March should be an exciting evening with a wide range of fantastic acts.
