Choosing a Saint NameWe ask that candidates start to think about choosing a saint name for their Confirmation. Below is a short guide to help you but we encourage parents to help candidates with this. You are not restricted to choosing a saint name of the same sex. Take a look at http://www.catholic.org/saints/stindex.php for an extensive list of saints.
Pray You are asking a saint to be a part of your life forever. Take some time to think and pray about a few things. What kind of role model are you looking for? What qualities do they have that you want? What kind of person are you hoping to become? Choose a saint that you can identify with. Pick a few different saints and then spend time in prayer and ask all of them to pray for you. You might find one begins to stick out more than the others. Read After you’ve taken time to pray about it, do some reading. There are plenty of websites out there that will give you information on saints. The Church has a saint for almost anything you can think of. That being said… don’t just pick a saint because they can levitate or bi-locate or read people’s thoughts. Asking St. Padre Pio to pray for you to gain the ability to bi-locate is not the point. Choose someone you feel like you can identify with that has the qualities of holiness you truly desire. Ask Talk to your parents, one of the clergy, one of us leaders, or siblings about their Confirmation saints. Why did they pick them? Do they have any special devotion to a saint? Who would they pick for you? Asking those who know you best can help you find a saint you can really rely on for your whole life. |
Choosing a SponsorWe also ask candidates to choose a sponsor for their confirmation:
Your Sponsor must be a practising and confirmed Catholic. Sponsors are people who you can rely on during your faith journey. They should be people with a deep commitment to the Catholic faith. The Sponsor may be male or female and should be at least 16 years of age. The Sponsor may not be the Candidate’s mother or father but may be the Candidate’s baptismal godparent. The Candidate is encouraged to choose someone close by. The Sponsor should be a person who is prayerful, dependable, loving and comfortable sharing his or her faith with young people. The Sponsor represents the support and prayers of the entire Church. He/she will be the Candidate’s SPIRITUAL FRIEND. |
