John Bunce and his wife Margaret have attended St. Edward The Confessor at Sutton Park for 24 years. John is an ex St Edward’s Parish Council Chairman and Committee member and both he and Margaret are still actively involved in the day-to-day lay ministries such as Reading, Flower arranging, Offertory collection, Cash counting, Coffee rota, Transport and other ad hoc matters.
John Bunce HS, SLm. is a representational artist painting Miniatures and small watercolours whose inspiration is drawn from the landscape, nature and travel.
John has always been attracted to drawing and painting but a busy professional life left little time to develop his interest. On retirement he took up painting as a hobby and after some years of trying different mediums and techniques he found and developed his own style in painting: Miniatures in watercolour. In the art world Miniature painting is defined by a number of parameters, the simplest of which, as title suggests, is size – Small! The average Miniature painting is approx. 3ins x 2ins in a frame no larger than 6ins x 4.5ins.
Ten years ago John was elected a full exhibiting member of The Hilliard Society of Miniaturists (HS) and also of The Society of Limners, Miniaturists & Calligraphers (SLm): hence the initials. During his 10-year membership John has had his Miniatures accepted each of those years by the Royal Miniature Society and his entries hung in their annual exhibitions at the Mall Galleries in London.
John is an active member of a number of local Art Societies and Groups. He is Chair of Chobham Art Group, a weekly painting group based in Chobham, and he regularly exhibits with both Guildford Art Society and Woking Society of Arts. John also coordinates a local group of exhibiting artists, ‘North Surrey Artists’ www.northsurreyartists.co.uk, comprising both professional and amateur artists who in recent years have mounted exhibitions in Guildford Cathedral, Guildford House Gallery and Barbers Gallery in Woking.
John has twice won awards at the annual exhibitions of the Society of Limners and last November won the George Weill Award at the Guildford Art Society annual exhibition in the Guildford House Gallery. More of his work can be viewed on: www.watercolour-painter.co.uk.
John is also a keen fly fisher who creates his own flies from fur and feather: another miniature art form!
