HARVEST FAST DAY CLIMATE CRISIS APPEAL
2nd and 3rd October
THE CLIMATE CRISIS

It seems likely that most people are now persuaded of the scientific case that humankind’s consumption and consequential emissions in the modern era have brought about substantial changes to the climate of our planet thereby producing extreme weather events. The alarming picture is described HERE in the UN statement in relation to the recent scientific report by the IPCC.
The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) at the Scottish Event Campus in Glasgow on 31 October – 12 November 2021.
Pope Francis, early in his papacy, brought the Climate Crisis to the attention of the world with the publication of the encyclical Laudato Sì, emphasising our duty to preserve and respect our common home. Daily it becomes more urgent to heed his call.

CAFOD’S CALL
The Climate Crisis is central to CAFOD’s Harvest Fast Day Appeal. We are asked to do three things: PRAY, PETITION, DONATE.
Prayer for Harvest Fast Day
In this period of Creation Time, as the community of the Catholic Parish of Guildford, let us pray this CAFOD prayer
Walk beside us, Lord, in the cool of the day,
in the garden you have created as our common home.
Walk beside us, Lord, as the cries of the forest pierce the dawn,
and flames rip through our common home.
Grant us courage, Lord, as we walk beside all those
who struggle to protect our common home.
Grant us hope, Lord, and the vision
to walk dark paths in the light of a single sunbeam.
Grant us grace, Lord, to put the flourishing of all people
and the wonder of your creation at the heart of all we do,
as we strive to be guardians of our common home.
St Francis, pray for us.
Petition for COP26 to succeed
Please support CAFOD’s petition HERE urging our Prime Minister to ensure that communities hardest hit by the climate emergency are listened to at COP26.
Donate money to CAFOD
This Harvest Fast Day, please donate to CAFOD resources for it to use on our behalf to help those many of our sisters and brothers around the world whose lives and livelihoods are destroyed or threatened by the ravages wrought by climate change, including support for those trying to make a difference in the face of almost insurmountable obstacles.
For example – take the case of Ivanilde, a mother, a grandmother and a farmer. For the last 19 years, she has been on the frontline of the struggle to protect our common home. You will hear her story at Mass and you can watch an account HERE.
Specific Climate Crisis Appeal CAFOD donation envelopes, which include a Gift Aid Declaration for use where appropriate, are available in our four churches. These envelopes can be delivered at church in the GRAY collection baskets. Cheques should be made payable to CAFOD.
Also in our churches there may be terminals available enabling contactless payment of donations directly to CAFOD.
Alternative ways of donating are:
If you are a UK taxpayer and wish to apply Gift Aid to your donation in option A above please download the CAFOD Gift Aid Declaration HERE, complete and sign it and include it with your cheque.
